About Stuart

Stuart Townend

Stuart is known and respected around the world as one of the leading worship songwriters of his generation. The depth of lyrical and theological content in songs such as In Christ alone, How deep the Father’s love, The power of the cross and Beautiful Saviour have caused some to draw comparisons with the greats of previous generations such as Watts and Wesley; while the marriage of great lyrics with wonderfully accessible melodies (largely through his successful writing partnership with Keith Getty) means his songs bridge different musical and cultural genres, and reach into every corner of the globe.

Stuart is also a gifted worship leader, musician, recording artist and seminar speaker, and spends a good part of his year leading worship at major Christian events, doing solo concerts, recording studio albums, and training emerging worship leaders and songwriters. He has featured on numerous live worship albums down the years, in addition to his solo albums - Say the Word (1997), Personal Worship (1999), Lord of Every Heart (2002), Monument to Mercy (2006), The Best of Stuart Townend - Live (2007), and There is a Hope CD & DVD (2008). His new album, Creation Sings, is due for release in May 2009.

Stuart was born in 1963, and grew up as the youngest of four children in a Christian family in West Yorkshire where his father was a Church of England vicar. From an early age Stuart played music with his brothers (one brother, Ian, went on to become a member of the group Heartbeat), beginning to play the piano at the age of 7, and teaching himself the guitar as a teenager

It was while living in West Yorkshire that at the age of 13 he made his Christian commitment. Then at 18 he moved to Brighton to study literature at the University of Sussex. It is here he met Caroline, whom he married in 1988, and they now have three children; Joseph, Emma, and Eden. Stuart has attends and regularly leads worship at CCK in Brighton, one of the new Frontiers network of churches headed up by Terry Virgo. The church is also home to a number of well-known figures in the area of worship, including Paul Oakley, Lou Fellingham, Phatfish, Simon Brading and Dave Fellingham, who has played a significant role in mentoring Stuart. The church also runs a training programme for worship leaders and musicians called the Worship School.

But it is as a songwriter that Stuart has had the greatest impact on the worldwide church, and it is this that is closest to his heart. “It is so important that our lives are built not on our feelings or circumstances, but on the word of God, and songs can really help us to meditate on and retain truth. I know from the correspondence I regularly receive that if you can express in songs the profound truth of the gospel in a poetic yet accessible way, they really can have an impact in people’s lives.”

Dear Stuart,
At 'Word Alive' this year you sang a song called Gethsemane for which I would like to purchase the sheet music.
Please could you tell me if it is available, and if so, where from, or when it will become available.

Thank you

Sarah Landon

I was wondering if you sell a book that contains the sheet music to your songs. Your songs allow people to sing wonderful praise to God. Thank you :-)

Bought the new CD at BrightonConference and have listened to it constantly! Love it - Thanks!
Can I get the sheet music to some of the songs?
Also I have re-written some lyrics to an old hymn - wondered if you would put it to a new tune? Bev

I want to congratulate you on an amazing the amazing song In Christ Alone. I have been trying to find someone who sang it. All I remember is that i caught a glimpse on an infomercial for a christian cd. The video of him singing was in black and white. I know it wasn't Michael English. Any help would be greatly appreciate. It's my favorite version.
Steve Thompson  - Thanks for the "Old" Hymns   |20-08-2009 16:54:01
Stuart, There were two "old" hymns that I came across recently that I wanted to research - In Christ Alone and How Deep the Father's Love. I love the theological depth of the "old" hymns and I wanted to read about the author, confident that I would find some inspiring story from the 1700s or 1800s regarding the writer. I was SHOCKED when I discovered the writer was contemporary (not to mention only a year older than me)!! And that the same person wrote both songs. Fantastic work!! In Christ Alone was sung at the church I attended last Sunday and the theological reality brought a lump to my throat and I looked to my left and saw a man wipe a tear from his eye. At that point I deciede to track down the writer. I also have Joy William's How Deep the Father's love in my iTunes. It is such a wonderful and valuable song that I made sure to put it on all of my children's iPods. There are currenlty so many Christian songs which have little true meaning, and which are shallow, and repetative. Your songs have great substance, and they give great glory to our Creator. God, through Jesus Christ has given you great talent, thank you for using your talent to glorify HIM. Thank you very much.

Hi, Stuart,

As I have been studying the books of Micah and Hosea, I have been struck by the depth of God's love for us. We, the wayward; we, the sinful; we, the faithless; we, the ungrateful; we, the arrogant; we, the foolish. I write what the Lord teaches me through His Word, the Bible, and really felt that my words were insufficient to express the magnitude of God's love for us. The Lord laid on my heart, though I don't believe I have heard the song for sometime, your song, "How Deep the Father's Love for Us." The words expressed perfectly what I felt welling up in my heart. Thank you for using your talent and your gifts from the Lord in such a way as to honor Him and bless His people. I, too, was surprised that this was not an old hymn by a composer from yesteryear. How grateful I am that there are Christian songwriters out there who write songs of depth and tremendous value. I am grateful, too, that you rely not on emotions or feelings or circumstances in your walk with the Lord and in the use of your talents for Him, but rather rely on the Word of God. Again, thank you!

Hello, Stuart!
As others mentioned, In Christ Alone and How Deep the Father's Love For Us have been very powerful for me and for our church congregation. When I found out that both were written by the same author, I wanted to see more music ... I listened to live concert recordings of Salvation's Song and There is a Hope, as well as a few others, but these two really touched me. I cried and cried at the beauty and wonder of the words, the music, and the amazing sound of so many voices united in praise to Christ alone, who has given us everything - absolutely everything - we need both in this life and the life to come! Praise be to God for His amazing blessings and thanks be to Him for the gift He has given you to write and sing such beautiful songs of praise to His awesome Name! Thank you!

In Christ Alone is in the same league as Amazing Grace in my opinion. A beautiful song that conveys the message of Christ perfectly. There are a lot of great Christian songs, but few that have the power of In Christ Alone. I thank you for writing the song, but more importantly I thank God for sending us his Son, and inspiring you to write this beautiful song.

You have given the world a precious gift in your soul-reaching music. I just discovered some of your songs a few months ago. Your moving "In Christ Alone" and "King of Love" are part of my daily worship -- they keep calling me to a deeper personal relationship with my Savior. I love Christian music and have treasured works by Michael W. Smith, but none of my long-time favorites can touch my heart as deeply as your music. I find myself singing it in my heart throughout the day. Thank you for the comfort and joy you give in helping us know the love of Jesus.

Nancy
